Turf cleaning in Sunset Beach

About 1,200 homes sit on the island and only around a hundred people live there full time — the rest turns over weekly most of the year. The town has worked since 2023 to bring its estimated 637 short-term rentals into a formal registration program. Turf has to look right for a different family every week. Sea Trail Plantation alone has 54 holes across three courses, by Rees Jones, Willard Byrd and Dan Maples; Thistle Golf Estates adds 27 more, and Sandpiper Bay is close by. The mainland neighborhoods around all of them are full of backyard greens, and a green under coastal pines needs a fall cleanup before it gets slow and bumpy: cleared, top-dressed with kiln-dried green sand, brushed and rolled. Two miles of barrier island means onshore wind carries salt spray onto turf, which dulls color and, left through a dry season, bonds with the infill. An EF3 tornado hit Sunset Beach in February 2021; the aftermath job is the same as after a hurricane: debris cleared, turf inspected edge to edge, then flushed clean.
