Turf cleaning in Surfside Beach

A Surfside rental gets new guests every Saturday, Memorial Day to Labor Day, and every one walks onto the turf. Every rental needs a business license, and next year's reviews mention the yard when it smells.

Salt spray dries as a white film that dulls color; a storm blows beach sand into the yard. Both flush out with a fresh-water rinse within a few weeks — left through a dry fall, salt bonds with the infill and sand slows drainage.

Beach dogs are banned 10 a.m.–5 p.m., May 1 through Labor Day, and leashed otherwise — a Surfside dog spends the rest of the day on the backyard turf.

Surfside's own code (section 14-56) prohibits discharging any organic or inorganic matter into the town stormwater system, including the streets, that could pollute or block it, and requires accidental discharges to be reported. On a lot this size the storm drain is at the curb a few feet from the turf, so we bag solids, let treatments dwell instead of flushing them, and keep rinse volume to what the sandy lot absorbs.
