Repair & restoration

Putting green restoration by someone who builds them

Speed comes from sand depth and rolling; a true roll needs a level surface. Brian has built and maintained greens for 13 years.

How do you restore a backyard putting green?

A synthetic green is restored by clearing debris, brushing to lift fibers and loosen compacted sand, cleaning the fringe and cups, top-dressing with fresh green sand to the right depth, brushing it in, and rolling to true the surface and set the speed. TIMELESS Turf Restoration does this across the Grand Strand; Brian has built and maintained greens for 13 years.

Every visit includes

  • Debris cleared from green, fringe and collar
  • Brushed and loosened
  • Cups and fringe cleaned
  • Green-sand top-dress to depth
  • Rolled and speed-checked
  • Seam, edge and drainage check
Thin, contaminated sand slow, fuzzy, ball drifts Full, rolled sand fast, true, consistent What sets speed 1. Sand depth, even across the whole green 2. Rolling, in more than one direction 3. No pollen, needles or leaf litter softening the surface 4. The turf product sets the ceiling
Green speed is sand depth plus rolling. Thin, contaminated sand runs slow and fuzzy; full, rolled sand runs fast and true.

Why greens slow down and go bumpy

Sand washes off the high side and piles on the low, so the ball drifts and the high side goes slow and fuzzy. Leaves and pollen soften the surface, and contaminated sand compacts unevenly, so the roll turns inconsistent.

The restoration

  1. Blow and clear. Green, fringe and collar, debris-free.
  2. Brush. Lift fibers, loosen compacted sand.
  3. Clean. Clear cups; clean the fringe like a lawn.
  4. Top-dress. Fresh green sand, even depth, brushed in.
  5. Roll. Compact and true it, more than one direction.
  6. Check speed. Adjust sand and rolling until it runs right.

What else we check

Seams, shifted cups, lifted edges and drainage all get checked. A green that puddles after rain has a base problem no amount of sand fixes — we'll say so, and since our sister company builds greens, we know what a proper fix costs.

Keeping it fast

  • Blow leaves and needles off weekly — that's most of it
  • Brush monthly to hold speed through the season
  • Under live oaks, plan an annual spring restoration

FAQs

Putting Green Restoration: questions we get asked

1How fast can you make my green?
Most backyard nylon or polyethylene greens reach a firm, club-practice roll — the ceiling depends on the turf product. Tell us the speed you want.
2How often should a putting green be top-dressed?
Once a year for most home greens, brushed in between. Greens under trees or with heavy use may need it twice.
3Can you fix a green that puddles?
No — cleaning and top-dressing won't fix a settled or poorly built base. We can diagnose it and, through our sister company, rebuild the section.
4Do you clean the fringe and chipping area too?
Yes. Fringe holds more debris than the green itself, and gets the same clean as a lawn: brushed, rinsed and groomed.
