Perforated versus fully permeable backing

Some turf backing is a solid material with drainage holes punched through it at set intervals, which drains well as long as infill and debris do not block those specific openings. Fully permeable backing is porous across its entire surface rather than relying on individual holes, so water can pass through anywhere rather than needing to find its way to a perforation. Both styles are common and both work well when clean; the difference matters mainly for how the backing responds once it starts to clog rather than for everyday performance.

The base underneath

Whichever backing is used, the water still has to go somewhere once it passes through, and that is the job of the compacted aggregate base beneath the turf. A base built with the right slope and drainage stone moves water away efficiently; a base that was built too shallow, laid flat with no slope, or set over ground that holds water naturally will back up even under turf with a perfect backing, which is why a drainage problem is not automatically a turf-cleaning problem.

What clogs the path

Pine pollen, dust, decomposed leaf litter and pet residue all settle into the infill over time, and given enough of it, that organic layer packs into the gaps between infill grains and coats the backing itself, narrowing the path water uses to pass through. This is a gradual process, which is why turf that drained perfectly when new can slow to a crawl years later without the turf itself changing at all, only what has built up in and on top of it season after season.

What normal drainage looks like

Clean turf built on a proper base passes a large volume of water quickly, leaving the surface damp rather than wet within an hour or two of a normal rain.
