Does artificial turf hold onto pollen and make allergies worse?
Yes, more than most people expect. Turf's dense pile and the infill packed around each fiber's base give windblown pollen far more surface area and far more places to lodge than the blade of a mowed lawn, and unlike natural grass, which sheds and gets cut on a schedule that removes trapped pollen, turf holds whatever lands on it until it is rinsed or washed out. A yard rinsed regularly through the Grand Strand's February-to-April pollen season generally carries less surface pollen than a natural lawn nearby; one that is never rinsed carries more.
Why turf traps pollen so well
Pollen is fine, sticky when damp, and prone to clinging by static, and a dense pile of synthetic fibers with infill packed around their base gives it far more surface area and far more nooks to lodge in than the smooth, mowed blade of a natural lawn. Natural grass also sheds and gets mowed, physically removing a layer of trapped pollen every week or two in season; turf just accumulates whatever lands on it until something washes it out. On the Grand Strand, pine pollen starts on warm days in February, peaks in March into early April, and live-oak catkins add a second wave in April, the same load covered on our pine needles and oak leaves page. A turf yard that is not rinsed through that stretch can be holding two solid months of it by the time people are back out enjoying the yard in May.
How it shows up
People notice it as symptoms tied specifically to the yard rather than the outdoors generally: sneezing or itchy eyes that start when walking across the lawn or sitting on it, worse on a still, dry day when nothing has rinsed the pile recently, better right after a rain or a hose-down. It also shows visually as the yellow-brown dusting or paste described on our pine pollen page, which is the same material causing the reaction.

The rinse schedule that actually reduces it
The fix is mechanical, not a filter or a treatment: rinsing washes pollen off the fiber tips and, over repeated rinses, down out of the infill where it stops recirculating into the air every time the turf is disturbed. A hose-down two or three times a week through the worst of pollen season, February into April here, keeps the surface load far lower than letting weeks of it build up. Pollen that has already worked into the infill and started to compact into paste needs a power brush to lift it back to the surface where a rinse can carry it out, the same process behind a Premium Restoration, and doing that once at the end of pollen season clears the whole season's load before summer humidity turns it into the algae and odor problems covered elsewhere on this site.
Keeping the load down
Stick to the rinse schedule specifically through February to April, the highest-load window here. Rinse or blow off the yard before spring gatherings rather than assuming it has handled itself. If pollen allergies are a real concern in the household, treat the annual deep clean at the end of pollen season as the priority visit of the year, since it is the one service that clears what months of rinsing alone may not fully remove from the infill.
