Damage & drainage

Burn marks on artificial turf, and the one that comes from your windows

Turf fibers are plastic, and plastic melts. A grill dripping, a fire pit ember, a dropped cigarette and, on the Grand Strand, sunlight bounced off an energy-efficient window all leave a patch of fused, browned fibers. Nothing cleans a burn. It gets cut out and patched, and the patch disappears if the turf matches.

Can burn marks on artificial turf be repaired?

Yes. A burn is melted fiber, so it cannot be cleaned, but the burned section is cut out and replaced with a matching piece of turf, seamed in and infilled so it blends. Burns come from grills, fire pit embers, cigarettes and, increasingly, sunlight reflected from low-emissivity windows onto the turf, which will keep burning the same spot until the reflection is blocked. TIMELESS Turf Restoration patches burns across the Grand Strand from $250.

Where burns come from

  • Grills and smokers. Drippings, a dropped coal, or radiant heat from a grill sitting directly on turf. Put a mat under it.
  • Fire pits. Embers carry farther than people think. A ring of small melted spots around a fire pit is the signature.
  • Cigarettes and fireworks. Single small fused spots.
  • Window reflection. Low-E glass reflects a concentrated band of sunlight, and at the right time of day and year it lands on the turf and melts a stripe. The tell is a brown, shiny, slightly curved band a few feet from a window on the south or west side, that gets worse every spring and fall when the sun is low. It will keep happening until the reflection is blocked with a screen, an awning, a film on the glass or a planting.

The repair

The burned section is cut out square, a matching piece is cut to size, the edges are seamed with tape and adhesive, and the patch is infilled and brushed so the grain matches. With an offcut from the original install it vanishes. With a close match it reads a shade greener until it weathers in over a season. That is the turf repair service, from $250.

Before the repair, stop the cause

We will not patch a window burn without pointing at the window, because the patch will burn too. Screens on the outside of the glass are the usual fix; a shade sail or a shrub works where the angle allows.

FAQs

Related questions

1Can I hide a small burn instead of patching it?
A small single spot can sometimes be trimmed with scissors and brushed over so it is less visible. It will always be there. A patch is the real fix and is not expensive.
2Is my turf flammable?
Residential turf is generally made to resist ignition and will melt rather than burn, but it is still plastic. Keep open flame off it and use a mat under any grill.
