How urine odor actually works
Fresh urine has almost no smell. Bacteria in the infill and on the backing break down the urea in it and produce ammonia, which is the smell. The bacteria live below the surface, in the sand and crumb layer the fibers are anchored in, and coastal humidity keeps that layer damp enough to stay active most of the year. Anything that only touches the surface of the turf never reaches where the smell is actually being made.
Enzyme cleaner: what it does
An enzyme cleaner labeled for pet turf works by digesting the organic residue itself, urea and the byproducts bacteria have already produced, rather than masking or disinfecting around it. Applied to the infill and left to dwell rather than rinsed off right away, it breaks the residue down into something bacteria can no longer feed on. It is the only one of the three that removes the actual source rather than reacting to its symptoms, which is why it is the base of our pet odor removal process.

Vinegar: a day, not a fix
Household white vinegar is a weak acid and neutralizes whatever ammonia it directly contacts on the surface. That buys a day, sometimes two, before bacteria produce more from the residue underneath, which vinegar cannot reach in any concentration a spray bottle delivers. It is genuinely useful for a different problem, the white mineral film hard water leaves, and it is harmless to the fibers. It is simply the wrong tool for odor that has already set into the infill.
Bleach: why we never use it
Chlorine bleach kills the bacteria it touches on contact, which is why it seems to work the first time. It also lightens turf fibers, especially dark green and older turf, breaks down the polyurethane backing with repeated use, kills any plant at the border it runs off to, and carries into the storm drain untreated. Worse for the actual problem, it does nothing to the urea residue itself, so once a new bacterial population moves in the smell is back, on turf that is now lighter and more brittle than it was. We do not use bleach on turf, and would not recommend it to a homeowner either.
What each one costs
A gallon of enzyme concentrate, diluted per label instructions, covers a typical yard's pet zone for several months of weekly maintenance, so the ongoing DIY cost is modest. White vinegar is a few dollars a gallon and lasts about as long for its narrower job, mineral film and a one-day surface deodorize. Bleach is also cheap to buy, which is part of why it persists in old advice despite the damage, since the purchase price never reflects the cost of the backing and fiber damage it causes over time, or the cost of the actual odor treatment still needed afterward because bleach never reached the residue. On a dollar basis, enzyme cleaner is not meaningfully more expensive than the alternatives; it is simply the only one of the three actually solving the problem it is bought for.
