Why does my artificial turf stay damp for a day after it rains, even without standing water?
Turf that drains slowly but does not fully pool usually has infill that has clogged with organic matter or compacted into a dense layer, both of which reduce how much water can pass through per hour without stopping it completely. Less often, the base underneath has lower permeability than it should. A simple pour test on a dry day, comparing the slow spot to a normal one, tells you which you likely have. Clogged or compacted infill is a cleaning fix; a slow base needs a look at the ground itself.
What normal drainage looks like
Clean turf backing is built to pass a large volume of water per hour. Normal is damp for an hour or two after a rain and dry, or close to it, by the next morning. If a spot is still visibly wet the next day and there was never a puddle, water is getting through, just far slower than it should, which is a step short of the full stoppage covered on our water pooling page. The usual causes are the same: infill that has clogged with pollen, dust and leaf litter and coats the backing, infill that has compacted into a dense pan under years of traffic and rain, or, less often, a base underneath that was never built to shed water quickly.
The pour test
On a dry day, pour a bucket of water on the slow spot and time how long it takes to visibly clear the surface, then do the same on a spot elsewhere in the yard that behaves normally and compare. A slow spot that is shaded and looks dirtier than the rest of the lawn points to organic buildup in the infill. A whole yard that is uniformly slow, not just one area, points to compacted infill throughout. A single isolated spot that stays slow even after the infill there has been cleaned and loosened points to the base.

What fixes it
Where organic buildup is the cause, a power brush lifts the clogged layer and a high-volume, low-pressure flush carries it out, which is the same process behind a Premium Restoration and restores the backing's normal flow rate. Where infill has compacted into a pan, it is loosened and, where it will not loosen, replaced and topped up through infill replenishment. If the pour test is still slow in that one spot after the infill has been dealt with, the base underneath is the reason, and that is a conversation about regrading rather than another clean.
Keeping it draining
Weekly debris removal in pollen and leaf season keeps the organic layer from ever building up enough to clog the backing. Do not let infill sit uncleaned for years between deep cleans, since compaction is gradual and easiest to reverse early.
