Why does my artificial grass feel crunchy when I walk on it?
Crunchy or hard artificial grass is almost always the infill: sand that has compacted into a pan under years of traffic and rain, bonded together by hard-water minerals, or crusted with dried urine and organic residue. Fibers can also stiffen from dried residue. The fix is loosening the infill with a power brush, cleaning or descaling it, and replacing any that has crusted, then re-leveling. Three kinds of crunch
- Compacted infill. The surface feels uniformly hard, drains slowly and the fibers lie flat. Years of traffic and rain have packed the sand into a pan. Power brushing and a drag loosens it; a top-up restores the cushion.
- Mineral-bonded infill. Hard in the sprinkler pattern, often with white crust on the fibers. Calcium from irrigation has cemented the sand. Descale and loosen; replace the worst.
- Residue crust. Hard, darker, and it smells, in the pet zone. Urine and organic matter have dried the infill into a block. Extract and replace, with an odor-control infill.
What we do
Diagnose which one on the inspection by where it is and what it smells like. Then power brush to break the surface, descale if minerals are involved, flush, and replace whatever will not loosen. The yard is re-leveled so the fibers stand and the surface drains. Most of it is a Premium Restoration; infill replacement is quoted by the square foot on site.
