Why synthetic fiber does this
Static charge builds whenever two materials rub together and one holds electrons more readily than the other, which is exactly what happens between shoes and synthetic turf fiber. In humid air, that charge normally dissipates into the moisture in the atmosphere before it builds up enough to feel. In dry air, cold winter days, low-humidity stretches, covered porch turf, there is nothing to bleed the charge off, so it accumulates until you touch a doorknob, a pet or another person and it discharges all at once.
