Is it normal for artificial grass to shed fibers?
A small amount of shedding in the first months after installation is normal and tapers off within a season, as loose trim fiber left over from manufacturing works free. Fibers that keep coming out of a lawn that has been down for years, especially in small clumps rather than single strands, usually mean the tuft-bind coating on the backing is aging and losing its grip, or the pile has been damaged by a wire brush, metal rake or similar stiff-bristle tool at some point. The first case is nothing to fix; the second is worth an inspection.
How turf holds its fibers
Fibers are not glued down individually. They are stitched through a primary backing in tufts and held in place by a latex or polyurethane coating on the underside, called the tuft bind. A little loose trim fiber left over from manufacturing works free in the first few cleanings and weeks of foot traffic on a new lawn, the way a new carpet sheds; that is cosmetic and stops on its own. Real fiber loss later means the tuft-bind coating has aged past its useful life under years of UV and heat, or been attacked by something on the turf, and the stitching lets go so whole tufts pull free instead of single fibers. Separately, running a wire brush, a metal rake, or a stiff steel-bristle attachment over turf, rather than a synthetic-bristle brush, physically tears or loosens fibers wherever that tool went.
How to check
New-lawn shed is fine, short bits that come off a broom or your hand, with no thinning visible in the pile and no backing showing. Run your fingers through a section; if only a few loose fibers come free and the pile still looks and feels full, that is normal. Backing failure looks like small clumps of several fibers still bound together at the base pulling free with modest pressure, with thinning or bare backing starting to show, usually first in high-traffic paths or the oldest, sunniest section of the lawn. Wire-brush damage shows as frayed, bent or missing fibers following the strokes of whatever tool was used, often straight lines or one worked-over area rather than a traffic pattern.

What fixes it
New-lawn shedding needs nothing beyond normal grooming; it resolves on its own. Backing failure cannot be re-glued fiber by fiber. Once the tuft bind lets go in a section, that section is cut out and replaced with a matching patch, the same as any other repair; if it is showing up broadly across an old lawn rather than in one spot, that is the turf reaching the end of its service life, a bigger conversation than a patch, and we say so rather than patch a lawn that is failing everywhere. Wire-brush damage is treated the same as any torn or frayed section: brushed and trimmed if minor, patched if the fibers are genuinely gone.
Keeping it from getting worse
Always use a synthetic-bristle brush or a power broom made for turf, never a wire brush, metal rake or stiff-tine landscape rake, anywhere on the lawn; that one habit prevents the entirely avoidable kind of shedding.
