Why did my artificial grass turn white or grey?
Artificial grass that has turned white or grey is one of three things: mineral deposits from irrigation or hard water, dried salt residue near the coast, or ultraviolet fade of the fiber's own pigment from years of sun exposure. A wet test tells them apart: mineral and salt deposits look darker and greener when wet and lighten again as they dry, while UV-faded fiber looks the same wet or dry because the color loss is permanent, in the plastic itself. Three causes, one color
Mineral deposits, mostly calcium carbonate from irrigation or well water, evaporate onto the fibers and build a pale, slightly gritty crust, worst near sprinkler heads. Dried salt works the same way near the coast, carried in on wind or storm spray and left behind as a white film once the moisture evaporates. Both sit on top of the fiber and can be washed and dissolved off. UV fade is different: sunlight breaks down the pigment inside the fiber itself over years of exposure, evenly across whatever gets the most sun, and there is nothing to wash off because nothing is sitting on the surface.
The wet test
Wet the pale area and look at it immediately. Mineral or salt deposits go darker and greener the moment they are wet, since you are seeing the actual fiber color through a thin dissolving film, then fade back to white as it dries. A UV-faded fiber looks exactly the same wet or dry, because the color loss is in the material, not a surface layer. Location is a second clue: deposits cluster near sprinkler heads or, after a storm, follow the direction spray blew in from; fade is even and follows years of the most direct sun, usually the open middle of a south-facing lawn rather than a shaded edge.

What fixes it
Mineral and salt deposits are removed with a mild, turf-safe descaling cleaner, worked in and rinsed thoroughly; muriatic acid and other strong acids are not used because they etch the fiber itself. That is the hard-water and stain removal service. UV fade has no cleaning fix; the color is gone from the plastic. A deep clean removes any dirt film sitting on faded turf and makes it look better, but it will not restore the color, and nothing on the market genuinely does.
Keeping it from getting worse
Adjust or cap sprinkler heads that spray directly onto the turf, since turf needs no water and every pass is pure mineral left behind. After a storm, flush salt spray out within a few weeks before it dries into a bonded crust. UV fade cannot be prevented on turf placed in full sun; it is a normal aging process, and knowing that ahead of time is worth more than a product that promises otherwise.
