How long does artificial turf last?
Well-built residential artificial turf that is brushed, kept at the right infill depth and deep cleaned once or twice a year commonly lasts fifteen years or more. The same turf left alone usually looks tired in five to seven years, and a neglected pet zone can be finished sooner than that. What wears out first
- Fiber tips on the paths. Fibers that lie flat get abraded along their length instead of at the tip. They mat, then split, then shorten. This is the first thing you see and it is the most fixable.
- Infill. It migrates downhill in heavy rain, compacts under traffic and fills with pollen and organics. Once it is thin the fibers lose their support and the backing loses its shade.
- Seams. Seam tape and adhesive last a long time dry and a short time under standing water. The first seam to open is usually the one in the low spot.
- Edges. Nails work loose, bender board rots, dogs dig at the corner. An edge that lifts gets walked on and tears.
- Color. UV fades turf slowly, over many years. Most turf that looks faded is dirty and brightens when it is cleaned.
- Backing. The polyurethane or latex backing goes last, from years of UV where the infill has thinned and from staying wet. When it cracks and fibers pull out in tufts, the turf is done.
Two timelines
These are what we see, not a laboratory result, and every yard is different. The point is the gap, not the exact years.

Why maintenance is mostly brushing and infill
Two mechanisms do most of the work. A fiber that stands upright is worn only at the tip, and a tip can take years of foot traffic; a fiber that lies flat is dragged along its whole length every time someone walks on it. Brushing against the grain is what keeps it upright. And infill at the right depth shades the base of the fibers and the backing from UV, holds the blades apart so they cannot mat, and spreads the load of a footstep. Thin infill exposes the two parts of the turf that cannot be repaired.
The third mechanism is moisture. An organic layer of pollen, dust and pet residue holds water against the backing all summer. Cleaning it off is as much about drying the turf out as about how it looks.
What shortens turf life on the coast
- Humidity. Infill on the Grand Strand is slow to dry out between rains from spring to fall, so anything organic in it keeps working longer than it would in a drier climate.
- Pollen. A yellow organic layer lands every spring. If it is not removed, it becomes the food for algae and bacteria all summer.
- Salt. Spray near the beach and floodwater in a storm dry into a crust that binds the infill and abrades the fibers.
- Windblown sand. Beach sand is fine and rounded and works down into the fiber base, where it holds water and is the wrong grade for infill.
- Standing water. Our sandy soils drain fast except where they do not; a low spot that holds water floats edges and softens seam adhesive.
- Fire ants. Active in spring and fall, they tunnel under turf and push infill up through it at the edges.
- Storms. Branches, debris impacts and floating edges in the September peak.
- Reflected sun. Low-e windows and glass doors can focus enough heat to melt fibers in a stripe. Not a coastal thing, but common on new houses here.
- Well water. City water in Myrtle Beach is soft, but private-well irrigation leaves mineral crust on the fibers that is abrasive when it dries.
The five-year checkup
At five years, have someone measure the infill in the paths and the pet zone, walk every seam in low sun, lift an edge in the low spot and look at the backing, and hand-broom a flat patch to see whether the fibers stand up or are worn short. At ten, do it again and add a pull test on a tuft in the sunniest spot. Turf that passes both checkups is on the long timeline.
