What storm water actually does to a green

A green rides out wind and rain fine on its own; it is what the water carries and where it pushes the sand that does the damage. Storm water moves sand off a green's high side and piles it on the low side, or carries it off the green entirely if there is nowhere for it to catch. Near the coast, storm surge and wind-driven spray bring salt and brackish water into the sand fill. Further inland, backwater flooding is more likely to leave silt or marsh mud sitting on the surface instead. Standing water finds the cups first and fills them like little wells, floating debris drives into the fibers, and edges and seams that were snug before can lift once the ground underneath them has been saturated for hours.

Let it drain before you touch it

Working a green while it is still holding water does more harm than the water itself. Walking on saturated sand pushes it further out of level in whatever direction your weight goes, and a cup lifted or a seam pressed while everything underneath is soft rarely goes back exactly where it started. Wait until the standing water is gone and the ground underfoot feels firm rather than spongy before starting the cleanup. That wait is also when to look, not touch: note where water pooled longest, since that is usually the same spot sand will have collected once things dry.

The recovery order, and why it runs in that order

  1. Clear debris with a blower on low. A blower on full power moves wet sand right along with the leaves and pine straw; low power lifts debris without taking the top-dress with it.
  2. Rinse with low pressure, high volume. Salt and silt are still sitting on and just inside the sand grains at this stage, before they have had time to dry and bond; a slow, heavy flush carries them out rather than driving them deeper the way a pressure washer would.
  3. Let it dry. Sand reads level and holds a straightedge check accurately once it is dry; wet sand shifts under the tool and gives a false reading.
  4. Check level with a straightedge. Lay it across the green and around every cup, looking for the same high-side, low-side pattern the storm itself created.
  5. Re-top-dress wherever the straightedge shows a gap, matching the surrounding sand.
  6. Roll to settle the new sand and work it in evenly.
  7. Check speed against what the green normally runs, since a green that plays faster or slower than before usually means the top-dress is not finished yet.

Cups, seams and edges

A cup packed with sand looks worse than it is: lift the collar, empty it, and check the socket underneath for standing water or a soft feel before resetting it level, the same reset described on our sunk or uneven cups page. Seams and edges are a different check. A seam that opened or an edge that lifted while the ground was saturated usually lies back down flush once it is reset and re-secured, covered under our turf repair service. A seam that will not sit flush no matter how it is pressed, or that keeps lifting in the same spot after being reset, is telling you something moved underneath it, not just on top of it.

Salt near the coast, silt further inland

The two are not the same job. Salt and brackish water dry into a crust that bonds to the sand the longer it sits, the same mechanism covered on our salt and sand after a storm page, and it responds to the same low-pressure flush described above. Silt or marsh mud left by backwater flooding behaves differently: it works down between the sand grains rather than crusting on top, and a single rinse often is not enough to clear it the first time. Both call for the same order of work, but a silt-heavy green is more likely to need a second rinse a day or two later, once more of it has worked back up to the surface.

When it is more than a clean

Most storm-hit greens come back with the sequence above. A base that has washed out is different, and it shows up as a soft spot that does not firm up once everything else has dried, a section that holds water on its own after the rest of the green has drained, or a straightedge gap that keeps reopening no matter how many times it is re-top-dressed.
